Des Moines Civic Center – Audio System Upgrade

As part of the Des Moines Civic Center, Des Moines Performing Arts is central Iowa’s premier not-for-profit performing arts center. Since 1979 it has grown from the dream of a small group of local business leaders to the cornerstone of a Des Moines redevelopment initiative. Audio Logic Systems has worked with the DMCC on many projects including audio networking, video distribution, multi-room AV, and conference room presentation systems. When it was time to upgrade the PA system in the main performance space we worked alongside consultant Kirkegaard on a design and install that would meet the expectations of their diverse programming.

We have employed Audio Logic Systems as a vendor for several projects over 15+ years. We have been very satisfied with the quality of their work, the professionalism of their staff, and their commitment to finding the most efficient and budget-conscience solutions to our needs.  They have always been willing to come to Des Moines on short notice when technical support is needed.  Audio Logic is committed to timely, effective technical support.  They are like family to us.”Greg Tracy, Production Manager/Head Audio, Des Moines Performing Arts.

The goal was to find a PA system that was easy to rig, visually appealing, and versatile. The process began with a shootout between multiple integrators then moved on to an extensive system rental period. By the time d&b audiotechnik was chosen for installation, Des Moines Performing Arts staff were very familiar with the product.

The PA exclusively  includes products by d&b audiotechnik. The left/right line arrays are each made up of ten V8 3-way passive cabinets underneath two V-Sub subwoofers. A center hang of two vertically arranged Vi7P are there for speech reinforcement. Six E6 2-way compact coaxial loudspeakers cover front fill needs and two J-Sub large format cardioid subwoofers reinforce the low frequencies. Onstage needs are met by 2-way monitors, a combination of the 15” M4 and 12” M6. The J-Subs are powered by D80 amplifiers while the rest of the system is powered by 30D install series amplifiers. We also provided storage and transportation solutions to allow the E6 front fills to be utilized in other parts of the building.

The Des Moines Civic Center features a 76-foot wide by 28-foot high proscenium stage, which is the focal point for a fan-shaped continental seating area that accommodates an audience of 2,744. In addition to being the home of the Des Moines Symphony, programming includes Broadway performance, concerts, and special presentations. Array Processing by d&b audiotechnik provides even tonal balance throughout the audience, as well as the ability to shift the sonic emphasis.  Level distribution can also be adjusted; If the back seats are not sold, level can be tapered off to reduce reflections. All of this control as well as system monitoring happens using d&b’s R1 Remote Control software.

Already familiar with Yamaha audio consoles, and desiring a rider friendly upgrade, a Rivage PM7 was an easy choice for their new Front-Of-House console. An update of patch panels and stage inputs allows Dante connectivity throughout the space. Audio consoles available on the network include the new PM7, an existing Yamaha M7CL, and a new Yamaha TF-Rack for backstage and lobby distribution. Also available on the network are 16 channels of Shure ULXD wireless microphones and a d&b ds10 for signal distribution to the PA system.

Des Moines Performing Arts is now equipped to maintain its standing as an outstanding community performing arts center focused on education, entertainment, and enlightenment.
