EDEN PRAIRIE, MN –  Audio Logic Systems (ALS) of Eden Prairie, Minnesota, in collaboration with d&b audiotechnik and Threshold Acoustics, has successfully completed a significant audio upgrade project at the Cathedral of St. Joseph in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

Dating back to 1918 and designed by famed French architect Emmanuel Masqueray, the Cathedral of St. Joseph has served as a vital hub for the Sioux Falls Catholic community for over a century. The recent audio system upgrade was a crucial component of a comprehensive acoustical performance review to dramatically increase vocal intelligibility within the historic cathedral. The two main objectives for the audio system were enhanced broadband pattern control, leading to superior speech intelligibility, and a complete overhaul of system processing and control.

Threshold Acoustics, based in Chicago, served as the acoustic consultants for the project. Their analysis revealed that the previous column speaker system was over-covering the room, producing excessive low-mid vertical lobing, and over-exciting the reverberant field. Audio Logic Systems, with a history of successful collaborations with Threshold Acoustics on various performance halls and churches, including the Holland Center in Omaha and St. Mark’s Episcopal Cathedral in Minneapolis, was brought in to address these challenges.

The upgrade featured 24C column loudspeakers and 4S loudspeakers, all powered by 5D amplifiers from d&b audiotechnik. The selection of d&b audiotechnik was driven by their exceptional pattern control and natural voicing for spoken word, which are critical in highly reverberant spaces to achieve intelligibility. The 24C column loudspeakers were particularly chosen for their cardioid pattern control down to 190 hertz and field-adjustable HF array, providing the precise control required for the project. Custom coloring of the loudspeakers was implemented to seamlessly blend with the cathedral’s ornate visual aesthetic. The 4S loudspeakers were selected as choir fills due to their compact footprint and natural voicing, effectively reinforcing the spoken word in the choir loft.

The audio upgrade was part of a larger renovation project at the Cathedral, which also included the replacement of the organ and acoustical treatment modifications. The main goal of these renovations was to rebalance the natural acoustics and the amplified  audio experience for musicians, clergy, staff and congregants.

Integration with QSYS provides the foundational processing and control for the system, allowing for custom programming of the user experience, preset control, automixing of inputs, and advanced automixing of audio for livestreaming that seamlessly navigates between direct and ambient room microphones. The new EW-D Sennheiser wireless system, featuring MKE-1 lapel and 865 handheld microphones, ensures a fully digital signal path with incredibly low noise from receiver to processor to amplifier.
